The most significant allergen in cats is Fel d 1, a protein found in cat saliva that is transferred to the fur when cats groom themselves. When cats lick their fur, Fel d 1 is deposited onto it, and this protein can remain active for several months even after it has been shed.
In addition to Fel d 1, other proteins such as Fel d 2 (found in cat urine) and Fel d 4 (also present in saliva) contribute to allergic reactions. These allergens can be spread through the air when cats groom themselves or shake their fur, making them easily inhaled by humans.
